FAQs - Million Squares Project
1. What kind of wool should I use for the square?
Any wool you desire, the choice is yours. I use Double Knitting Wool with a size 4.5/5 mm crochet hook.
2. What colour do the squares have to be?
Any colour is welcome.
3. Can beginners participate?
Absolutely. Simple patterns are perfect.
4. Do the square patterns need to be complicated and intricate?
The pattern can be as simple or as complicated as you wish it to be. If you are feeling creative and want to make an unusual design, please do so. The idea is to have fun and enjoy the process.
5. Can children take part?
Yes. Schools and youth groups are encouraged to participate.
6. My square is bigger/smaller than the 4 inches mentioned on the website. Do I need to ensure that it is exactly 4 inches?
The 4 inches is a guide. If it is slightly bigger or smaller, it doesn’t matter.
7. What do I make with the squares?
You can make a coaster with one square or a place mat with 4-6 squares or a scarf or blanket. It really is your choice.
8. How many squares should I make?
The target is 1 million squares so the more squares you make, the quicker we reach our goal.
9. What do I do with the squares when I’ve made them?
Please take a photo of each individual square and post it on the Facebook Page @1msquares. If you know of someone living with dementia or who has passed from it, please provide a dedication to them with 4 attributes of them.
The physical square can be donated to a dementia charity, a person living with dementia or their carer or a dementia patient in a hospice/hospital
10. Is there a deadline?
This project will be ongoing until we reach the 1 million squares. However, the earlier we start creating the squares the better.
